Caroline Becker Joss--Class of 1980
Mrs. Joss is the President of Caroline Rose, Inc. An Oak Park based firm
specializing in apparel design and production. She graduated from
the University of Illinois in 1984, founding the Caroline Rose firm with
her mother in 1987. Caroline Rose designs are carried by major department
and specialty stores throughout the country, including Marshall Field,
Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Von Maur. Her designs have been
featured in Women's Wear Daily and in Chicago Apparel Center fashion shows.
In 1998, her firm was awarded a "Designer of the Year Award". While
continuing to operate her successful company, she earned a J.D. degree
from the Chicago Kent College of Law and was admitted to the Illinois bar
in 1992. In November 1999, Crain's Chicago Business named her as one of
the 40 individuals in Chicago who were at the top of their professions
while under 40 years of age. She just recently received the prestigious
University of Illinois "ACES Alumni Association Award of Merit, 2000".
Caroline is also very active in community service, having served on the
Board of the Fillmore Center, a not-for-profit mental health and human
service organization. She is currently President of the Board of
Directors. She is married, has two daughters and lives in River Forest |
Michael Colgrass--Class of 1949
Mr. Colgrass has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Fine Arts, as a
performer, a teacher and composer. A graduate of the University of
Illinois, he has had his musical compositions performed by the world's
best known orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony,
The Toronto Symphony, the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society and many
others. His compositions have been recorded by the St. Louis Symphony,
the Boston Symphony, the American Symphony and the Toronto Symphony.
He won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his composition, "Deja Vu"
and a 1982 Emmy for a Public Broadcast System documentary entitled, "Soundings:
The Music of Michael Colgrass". For 25 years, he has provided workshops
throughout the world on performing excellence, combining Grotowski physical
training, mime, dance and Neuro-Linguistic programming. Mr. Colgrass
is very active in community service, having served on the Board of the
Toronto Symphony Orchestra and regularly opening his home to young musicians
and performers. He has also written in the New York Times, Christian
Science Monitor and and Music Magazine on topics related to creativity
and life skill. He resides in Toronto, Canada with his wife Ulla.

Rolf M. Gunnar, MS, M.D.--Class of 1943
Dr. Gunnar is a renowned cardiologist, presently operating his practice
in the local community. He earned his baccalaureate degree from Northwestern
University in 1946, an M.S. in Pathology in 1948 and his M.D. from Northwestern
in 1949. Dr. Gunnar served as a Captain in the US Army, earning a
Bronze Star for valor during the Korean War. He has been affiliated
professionally with the University of Illinois Hospital, Cook County Hospital,
the Hines VA Hospital and with Loyola University Hospital , as well as
at MacNeal Hospital. Dr. Gunnar has served as a member and officer
of many professional organizations including the American Heart Association,
the Chicago Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the
American College of Physicians, the American Board of Internal Medicine
and the Association of University Cardiologists. Dr. Gunnar has received
dozens of awards, frequently being named on lists of "best" doctors, medical
specialists and medical teachers. He is a prolific writer, having
authored two textbooks, 180 abstracts and at least 244 professional articles.

J. Alfred Rider, M.D., Ph.D--Class of 1938
Dr. Rider is a renowned medical practitioner specializing in gastroenterology,
presently practicing in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Rider earned his baccalaureate
degree from the University of Chicago in 1942, his M.D. in 1944 and a Ph.D
in pharmacology in 1951, also from the University of Chicago. Dr.
Rider has been active in teaching and training activities, serving on the
faculty of the University of California, Irvine, the Davies Medical Center,
the University of Chicago, University of California, Davis, and the University
of California School of Medicine, San Francisco. He has served and/or
is presently a member or officer of not less than 60 professional societies
including a term as president of the Medical Board of California. While
specializing on gastroenterology, he has also been active in research on
children's brain disease and has served on the Presidents Committee on
Mental Retardation. Dr. Rider has been cited for his professional
accomplishments in many biographical directories including, American Men
of Science, Leaders in American Science and The National Register of Prominent
Americans. He is the winner of many awards from the American College
of Gastroenterology and the American Medical Association. Dr. Rider
is the inventor of the product DIGEL. He is presently in private practice
in San Francisco and lives in Mill Valley CA. |
