He launched his radio career in 1980 at WTAQ in LaGrange under the banner of The Sportsweek Radio Network. On his weekly show he interviewed student and professional athletes, coaches, and other sports personalities, and he pioneered the concept of hosting a show at a sports bar with a live audience. In the 1980s Phil was the sports editor for several local publications and a freelance writer for national sports magazines. Phil began covering golf in 1975 at the Western Open for the Associated Press and covered over 500 golf tournaments in his career. His Chicagoland Golf radio show began in 1994 and was broadcast initially on WMVP (AM 1000) then on WSCR (AM 670). In 1995 Phil founded the Illinois Women’s Open, a state championship for amateur and professional women golfers.
