The rise and
pervasiveness of adolescent use of alcohol and other drugs is one of the
greatest sources of conflict and pain in American homes today. While many teens
who experiment with and use alcohol and other drugs believe that it is of no
concern to anyone but themselves, the fact remains that everyone loses as the
allure and pleasure of a chemically induced “high” can, progressively, take
over. Teens seem oblivious and powerless as their healthy, positive interests,
academic performance, and family and peer relationships deteriorate. Parents
and other family members often feel helpless living with fear and dread not
knowing what the next phone call or knock at the door might bring.
