Mission Statement
- Fine Arts Survey is a 1/2 credit graduation required course which students will explore Music, Visual Arts, Dance and Drama. In this creative introduction, students will begin to develop an understanding and appreciation of the Fine Arts. Important events, artistic movements, philosophies, geography, cultures and social history will be examined.
- The students will familiarize themselves with the basic vocabulary of each artistic discipline. Students will also develop insights about the description, analysis, interpretation & judgment of the arts through critique. As a part of class, students will have the opportunity to attend live theater, concerts, dance productions, visit museums & the RBHS Informance.
Daily Preparation & Policies
- Please be prepared mentally and physically for each class. You will be expected to demonstrate appropriate classroom behavior, attitude, and be attentive in class. The proper use of equipment and supplies is also expected. This will ensure a respectful and positive environment for students and teacher.
- We do not use a textbook for Fine Arts Survey. Please be sure to keep all notes, papers and handouts.
- Please be sure to label all classroom assignments with the proper lead teacher’s name, class period and date.
- If there are assignments to be made up, the work is due within 2 weeks of the end of a rotation. The assignments must be turned in to the teacher of that rotation. Work will not be accepted after 2 weeks.
Rotation Calendar
- Students will rotate between fine arts teachers and classrooms during each of the four week rotation of music, art, drama, & dance.
- All Fine Arts Survey Rotations dates are listed on the Fine Arts Combined Calendar that can be found on the RBHS Fine Arts website & Fine Arts Survey Syllabus. Please record theses dfainto your student handbook.
- Students are responsible for knowing all calendar rotation dates and schedules.
Grading Procedures
- Active participation in class discussions and activities are very important in a class such as this. Your ability to contribute thoughtfully to class discussions can be a significant part of your grade.
- Each Fine Arts Rotation has a total of 400 points of credit that a student may earn, totaling 1600 points for the entire semester.
- Students will also participate in a final exam worth 20% of their final grade.
Fine Arts Proficiency Exam

The Fine Arts Proficiency Exam is designed to provide exemption from the required course. The Proficiency Exam is offered twice a year, traditionally the week prior to Thanksgiving & Spring Break. Students must sign up for the Fine Arts Proficiency Exam at the RBHS Student Services Office by 3:00pm on the Friday prior to the exam. The Fine Arts Proficiency Exam is comprised of two parts:

Part I – 100 Question Multiple Choice Test (25 Questions each in Music, Art, Drama & Dance)
The multiple choice test must be passed with a minimum score of 70%. Students who attain a score of 70% or better may then complete Part II of the proficiency exam requirement. The results of the Multiple Choice test will be available 8:00a.m.on the following Friday morning at the RBHS Student Services Office.

Part II - Fine Arts Performance Review / Critique Essay: The student must attend and reflect on their experience at a professional fine arts production / exhibition in any of the following areas: music, art, dance, or drama/theater. The written paper which documents the fine arts experience must satisfy the following criteria: 3-4 pages in length; typed and double-spaced using a 12 point font; a program, informational brochure, ticket stub, or other evidence of attendance must accompany the written paper. Please refer to the separate accompanying handout which gives further details concerning the expectations of this portion of the proficiency exam.
- Students will receive a letter approximately 2 weeks later letting them know if they past all portions of the Fine Arts Proficiency Exam or not. If students pass all areas of the exam, they will then be exempt from taking Fine Arts Survey and half of the one credit Fine Arts Graduation requirement.
