Big6 Research Project -- The Vegetative State based on the reading
of Stuck in Neutral, |
![]() |
Assignment:
You will be conducting research on the
vegetative state experienced by Shawn in the novel Stuck in Neutral.
A great deal of controversy has swirled around the definition of the condition
as well as the treatment that people should receive.
Strewn throughout these arguments is the controversy about whether people in a
vegetative state are aware of those around them, and whether their state even
constitutes life.
You will be researching information with a goal of answering this question:
Should a person in a vegetative state be euthanized (killed)?
You will collect information on three
subtopics related to vegetative state:
the physical conditions of the person,
the issues surrounding the controversy (legal, religious, and ethical),
and specific cases that have been in the news.
Once you've read and highlighted the
articles and taken notes, you will put your collected information in the form of
an outline,
stating reasons in favor of euthanasia and arguments used by those opposed to
euthanasia.
Check out the rubric below to see how you will be graded.
Resources for your research:
Copies of articles will be provided for you.
Be sure to use FOUR articles to get the best score.
Be sure that you have answers to all sections of the outline -- if there's a portion that you can't fill in, you'll need to find another article that answers the question.
