Students may use a computer in one of the
four computer labs with an entire class, during a study hall period,
or before/after school. Computers are made available and are to be
used for educational purposes, and students are expected to comply
with the provisions of the
Acceptable Use Policy, which all learners must sign before their
access is authorized.
Signing up for a lab
Teachers may sign up no more than one
month in advance to bring a class to a computer lab.
When signing up, the teacher will:
- establish a seating chart, using a form
available in each lab.
- submit a class list to the Lab
Assistant, who will ensure that all students' accounts are
activated.
- provide an alternative assignment for
any student who has lost Internet access, if the intended
assignment requires Internet access.
- submit a lesson plan to the
Media Specialist if resource planning and assistance would be helpful.
- let the Lab Assistant know of any
special needs, such as headphones, planned for the computer
lesson.
- Know the software well enough to prepare
a lesson. The teacher may wish to sign up for one of the Tech
Tidbit mini-lessons available through the Library &
Instructional Technology Department.
- If you wish to have a Curriculum Page,
work with a Media Specialist to research appropriate web
resources. Either you or the Media Specialist can create the
webpage of Internet links. The Media Specialist will post your
Curriculum Page to the web.
A teacher's role when bringing a class to the lab
During the time that a class is in the lab,
the classroom teacher is expected to circulate, monitor,
interact, instruct, and supervise. If any discipline issues
arise, it is up to the classroom teacher to handle them.
Computer programs will be used more effectively and
inappropriate use will be minimized if the teacher maintains
awareness of student activities.
Please enforce the following important
rules. They were established to protect the equipment so
that everything will be working for the next class or the
next student who wishes to use a computer.
- Every student should stay in his/her
assigned seat until the final dismissal bell rings.
- Food and drink are not allowed in the
lab.
- Backpacks are to be placed out of the
way to prevent tripping and to avoid interfering with the
network or electrical cables.
- The Lab Assistant will deliver
printouts. We wish to avoid a confusing mass of people around
the printer station.
The Lab Assistant will take care of
technical problems such as printer problems, difficulty in
logging in, and distribution of headphones or other
peripherals. She can also back-up teacher supervision by using
NetOp for remote viewing of student workstations.
Students using computers
during study hall
In order to use a computer during the day,
students must:
- Be in the lab before the tardy bell
rings.
- Present a current ID.
- Fill out both halves of an attendance
slip and be checked in by a Lab Assistant.
- Sign in on the clipboard and indicate
the specific computer workstation to which they have been
assigned.
- Stay in their assigned seat throughout
the period.
- Behavior:
- If a student abuses the behavioral
expectations during a study hall in a computer lab, he/she
will lose the opportunity to use those facilities during
study hall for the remainder of the month ( if it’s halfway
through the month, the restriction lasts for the following
month as well.) NOTE: Succeeding offenses multiply
the time; i.e., second offense = two months, etc.
- Various consequences may be assigned
for inappropriate use of technology. Punishments range from
loss of Internet access - - - to payment for actual damage
to equipment - - - to loss of access to any computer.
Students using computers
before or after school
Both the 253 and 255 labs are open for
students from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students must:
- Sign in on the clipboard and indicate
the computer they'll be using.
- Stay at only that computer until they
leave the lab.
- Note: neither an ID nor a pass are
not required for before or after school use. Students are still
expected to comply with the Acceptable Use Policy.
Printing
In color: To conserve materials, we
charge 50 cents for each page printed in color from a
computer. Always be judicious and selective when deciding what
and how much to print. Help save a tree! Think before you
print.
For personal use: If a student
prints items not assigned by a teacher, there will be a 2 cents
per page charge (or 50 cents for color).
Choosing a printer: There are
different networked printers available in each lab. Please see
a Lab Assistant for help in selecting the best printer for your
needs.
Checking out computer
accessories
Headphones or microphones: Students
must exchange their ID's to borrow equipment. Teachers may
request that this equipment be made ready for an entire class
prior to their arrival.
Digital Cameras: Teachers
may obtain a digital camera from AV Services (You
may e-mail a
request in advance.) Batteries, an instruction manual, and
hands-on instruction are also available. Teachers may allow
students to use the camera, but the teacher assumes all
responsibility for returning it in good condition or for paying
for any repairs required if it is returned damaged.
