Poetry Resources

(return to lesson links)

The resources below were collected for use in teaching a survey of poetry to grade 9 students of any level.  They include tools that students can use, collections of poetry, and lesson ideas for teachers.

Site Annotation
Online Rhyming Dictionary

Very simple to use tool for students.  You "search" for rhymes to a word.  I liked this tool because it let you do end rhymes, beginning rhymes, double rhymes, etc.  It also explain WHAT each kind of rhyme was.

Sonnet Central

This site is a repository of sonnets from around the globe with a focus on Elizabethan sonnets.

Online Magnetic Poetry A tool for use with students.  Simulates "magnetic poetry".  Different kits provide words on the screen that students can click and drag into different arrangements.
PoetryZone A clearinghouse for poetry information - lesson plans, interviews with poets, poetry contests online, etc.
Academy of American Poets A great resource of American poetry.  Search by author, first line, key word, title, etc.  Also includes online audio records of poems being read out loud!
Poet Links Organized by author - collections of links to texts of a range of English poets works.
Favorite Poem Project Started by poet and writer Robert Pinsky, this project includes video and audio footage of people reading their favorite poems.
Representative Poetry Online Another collection of a variety of famous poets' works online - searchable in a variety of different ways.
The Poetic Link This site allows you to critique amateur poetry and to submit your own amateur poetry to be critiqued by others.
Freeality: Thesaurus A tool for students - online searchable thesaurus and quote databases.  Useful when looking for the "right" phrase or the "right" word for a poem.
Everypoet.com Another large archive of full-text poetry online.
The Poetry Resource A clearinghouse of poetry information - links to other sites like this one.
Contemporary American Poetry Archive Full-text of many poems online.  The nice thing about this one is that the poems are from more "contemporary" authors.  Lots of free verse, non-traditional topics and themes.  SOME mature subject matter!
Line Break Explorer An interactive tool/simulation for students.  Lets them look at how line breaks affect poetry and lets them try to change line breaks within a poem.
Muse Poetry Generator Gives students a "first line" of poetry for them to write from.  A little canned, but it could help a reluctant writer.
Instant Poetry Forms A long list of "forms" that allow students to enter their own words in and generate a poem.  I personally liked the "William Carlos Williams" tribute poems riffing off of "Plums".
Sestina Generator Simple tool for students that lets them plug in the end words of a sestina and see the resulting structure of the poem.
Tools for Analyzing Poetry A no-nonsense outline of all of the different aspects of a poem you might look at when reading it analytically.  Include links about meter, verse, forms, terms, etc.
Interactive Poetry "Real-time" creation of poems with other people around the Internet who add a line at a time.  Just be aware of possible strong language as the site is uncensored.
Glossary of Literary Terms A nice, fairly comprehensive list of terms relating to poetry.
