Almanacs/Encyclopedias (those listed below are free sites, but much better online encyclopedias are available as subscription sites, such as Encyclopedia Britannica and World Book Online (available throughout our school, or at home if you use the password - just see a librarian to get the information)

Infoplease includes the Random House College Dictionary atlas and the concise Columbia Encyclopedia Columbia Encyclopedia Online version of the one-volume encyclopedia -- contains 51,000 entries and many hypertext cross-references
The Britannica Concise (hosted by Yahoo) Good for quick answers to many questions, the 25,000 entries are limited to a fact-filled paragraph Encarta fairly comprehensive but condensed version of Microsoft's popular digital encyclopedia

Lives, the Biography Resource links to thousands of biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, letters, oral histories - searchable by individual name

Who2 Each profile includes a concise paragraph and links to four good Web sites.

Biography.com includes information from the Cambridge Encyclopedia Database, the Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography, and such A&E resources as the Biography and History Channels and Biography Magazine. The Biographical Dictionary includes more than 28,000 brief profiles of notables from ancient times to the present day. Searchable by name, date, position held, profession, literary and artistic works, achievements, and other keywords.
Grolier's American Presidency includes content from the Encyclopedia Americana for grades 6 - adult (along with other content for elementary age students) FRtR: Presidents offers profiles as well as links to speeches, writings, and libraries
