Citation Machine and EasyBib are free web sites which quickly put together multiple entry bibliographies in APA or MLA format.  While they do not offer the virtual notecards feature of NoodleTools, they are free, currently available, and good for quick research projects.

Writer's Workbench is a toolbar option now available within Microsoft Word.  It allows students to self-edit and proofread their papers far beyond the capabilities of spell and grammar check.
