Word Quick Start

What is Word?

Word is Microsoft's word processing software.

How do I access Word?

On the RBHS system, you can reach Word by selecting it from the "Microsoft" menu of the Novell Application Launcher.

Why would I use Word in a classroom?

On the simplest level, students leave school unprepared if they are not ready to word process papers.  Word produces neat, legible work and offers the assistance of spell-check.

Word processing as opposed to hand writing a paper also provides students with the opportunity to revise easily and fluidly, rather than having to re-write a draft from scratch.

However, word does offer opportunities BEYOND simple word processing - it can be used interactively with students and teachers in writing workshops as well as creating simple web pages.

Follow the links below for sample lesson ideas for using Word:

A writing instructor's hotlist of ways he's used Word in his classroom.  I'm a fan of the "musical chairs" activity and have used it several times in my classroom as well!

Tracking Changes With Word

This highlights a really underutilized feature of Word.  Word allows readers to make comments and track changes within their work.  There are MANY applications of this process for writing workshops.

Converting Word Documents to PowerPoint

Just a little add-on.  If you don't want to "teach" PowerPoint, but still want students to create a presentation, you CAN have the students create a Word document that will convert directly into a simple slideshow.  The instructions are at this link.
