SMITHSONIAN LATINO CENTER YOUNG AMBASSADORS PROGRAM

 

Seniors graduating in 2010 will spend one week at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. at a training seminar followed by a four-week internship at a cultural institution in their local communities.  The week internship is cost-free, and a stipend is given at the end of the internship.  More information and an application are accessible at

 UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

 

This one week camp from July 11-16 allows female students to engage in some hands-on projects with University of Dayton professors, meet with female engineers and engineering students, and visit a job site.  Girls who have just finished the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grades are eligible to attend.  Cost is $475.  Check www.udayton.edu/engineering/hs_programs for more information and a registration form.  The application deadline is June 1.

WESTERN ILLINOIS ADVENTURES IN FILMMAKING

 

This program for current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders runs from July 11th to 17th.  Cost is $499.  Students produce a film from the script to the end product under the guidance of an experienced filmmaker.  The application form is in Student Services or at www.wiu.edu/NonCredit/conferences/youth.  Applications will be accepted as space permits.

 

OTIS SUMMER OF ART

 

This four week program from July 6 to July30 is for students aged fifteen and older.  Classes meet for seven hours daily and include work in studio classes as well as a concentration in for more in-depth study.  See www.otis.edu/continuing_education/summer_of_art/ for registration forms and more information.  The approximate cost of the program is $2,700 and scholarships are available.  Applications are accepted as space allows.

 

PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

 

Located at Boston University, this six-week program for ambitious high school students runs from June 27th to August 7.  The program seeks to increase students’ curiosity with respect to the creative elements of mathematics.  The cost is $2,700, and financial aid is available.  Applications are accepted until May 30, 2010.  More information can be found at www.promys.org 

 

BROADREACH

Broadreach offers a range of educational travel programs for students of all ages.  Possibilities include marine biology trips or eco-adventures in Costa Rica.  Cost depends on the length of the trip and destination.  See www.gobroadreach.com for more information. 

 

BLUE LAKE FINE ARTS CAMP

 

Blue Lake Fine Arts camp is located in western Michigan in the Manistee National Forest.  Students can sign up for two-week sessions in areas such as dance, theatre, piano, visual art, and jazz.  Tuition is $1,075 per two-week session.  Go to www.bluelake.org for more information and an application.  RB students possibly could qualify for a $480 discount on tuition.  See Mr Franko if you are interested in the scholarship.

 

KETTERING UNIVERSITY SUMMER WOMEN’S ENGINEERING PROGRAM

 

The Lives Improve Through Engineering (LITE) Program at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan runs from July 18th to July 30th.  This program is for current junior girls.  Students will work on projects designing air bags, car seats, test dummies, and artificial limbs.  Applications and more information are at www.kettering.edu/lite.  The deadline to apply is April 13, 2010, and the cost is $500.

 

AMERICAN LEGION ILLINOIS GIRLS STATE

 

Female students in their junior years can apply for this one-week session learning about the government through participatory activities including an election and party convention.  The program takes place at Eastern Illinois University from June 13th to 19th and costs $200.  Participants apply through their local American Legion Auxiliary Unit.  See Mr Franko if you are interested in applying.  Students can apply until all the spots are taken. 

 

BRADLEY UNIVERSITY SUMMER FORENSICS INSTITUTE

Students participating in this two-week camp work on their public speaking skills with high school and college coaches.  At the end of the two weeks students will perform their event in a festival and receive feedback from several staff members.  Cost is $995, and the camp is open to current freshmen through juniors.  Apply online at http://www.bradley.edu/continue/.  Applications are due by June 18th.

 

BRADLEY UNIVERSITY SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

This one-week program is open to current sophomores or juniors and seeks to develop leadership skills through classroom instruction and hands-on activities.  Cost is $400 and includes lodging at one of Bradley’s residence halls.  Applications are due May 14th and can be found at: http://www.bradley.edu/ccd/summerenrichment.

 

 THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO SUMMER PROGRAMS

The University of Chicago offers a range of programs including college-level coursework, intensive language courses, and a traveling academy in Greece.  See http://summer.uchicago.edu to learn more and apply.  The Traveling Academy deadline is April 15th, and all other program applications are due May 15th.

 

DES PLAINES VALLEY REGION CAREER CAMPS

The Des Plaines Valley Region is a consortium of six local high school districts providing students with opportunities to explore different careers.  They have free camps this summer dealing with different areas such as health careers, first aid, food sanitation, and computer science.  Registration starts April 12th.  Follow this link to apply: Career Camps.

 

CIP SUMMER PROGRAM

The College Internship Program (CIP) provides individualized social, academic, career, and life skills instruction to students with Asperger’s or Learning Differences.  Their summer program lets students experience life on a college campus for two weeks, while pursuing individualized goals.  The cost of the program is $3,875.  Applications can be found at http://www.cipsummer.com/

 

EIU LEADERSHIP AND COLLEGE PREP CAMP

Eastern Illinois University hosts this one-week camp from July 11th to July 17th for minority students in the top 50% of their class who are currently sophomores or juniors.  The cost of the camp is $20, since the rest of the expenses are met with a scholarship.  Students will gain knowledge of the application process and learn skills helpful for being successful in college.  The deadline for application

 

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS ARCHITECTURE CAMPS

 

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale has a range of summer camps including an architecture camp for high schoolers.  The camp runs from July 18th to July 23rd.  The cost is $499 and includes educational materials, camp instruction, and room and board.  Registration closes when space is filled.  See SIUC - Architecture for more information and a registration form.

 

LEWIS UNIVERSITY AVIATION SUMMER CAMP

 

In this camp, students will participate in aviation classes, take a behind-the-scenes tour of O’Hare Airport, use the university’s flight simulators, and fly along in a Cessna 172 every day.  The camp runs from June 21st to June 25th and costs $1,250.  If interested, register at www.lewisu.edu/AviationSummerCamp.
