PHILOSOPHY

We in our office want every student to feel they are welcome.  We want the student body to know that there are resources available to answer or help in any aspect of their high school life.  We are available for them at any time with every situation with which they are confronted.   If we don’t have the answers, we will direct them to someone who does.  At times, discipline may be our only solution, but we want students to learn from their decisions.

RB LIFE

What is one of the most important things I can do as a parent to help my child enjoy his or her time at RBHS?

Communicate with your child on a daily basis.  Watch for changes in their attitude about school.  If you notice something of concern, ask them point blank.  If they do not open up to you, I would contact their counselor immediately.

Where can I obtain information regarding the events being held at school?

Go to our website and click on Calendar.  The information is also in the student/parent handbook.

When should my child carry their school ID?

Students are to have their ID in their possession at all times.

Where is the lost and found located?

Student Services Department

When attending school-sponsored events, where can I park?

Depending on the event, we have a few locations we use for parking: the lot off First Avenue, the student lot and the Zoo’s south lot.  The parking spots in front of school may also be available.  If you have to park on the residential streets, to avoid a parking ticket, please pay attention to the parking restrictions posted.

How do I obtain a parking permit for my child?

Permit forms must be completed and returned to my office with all of the required documents.  Permits are issued to eligible seniors first and then to underclassman, as available.

Why are students not allowed to attend school until they have received all of their immunizations?

It is a state law.

What should I do if I know of students attending RBHS who live out of district?

Contact ext.112 and leave as much information as possible.  You may choose to leave it anonymously.

Whom do I contact regarding registering a new student?

Mrs. Presta at ext. 111

SAFETY

Whom should I contact with information that might impact the safety of a faculty member, student, or students?

Contact the operator at ext. 100 and tell her to contact me by radio.  Do not leave a message.  Speak to a person.  Contact the operator at ext.100 if all of the numbers listed above go to voicemail.

DO NOT LEAVE THIS INFORMATION ON VOICEMAIL.

How can I keep my child’s belongings as safe as possible while they are in school?

Make sure that they do not give any other student their locker combination and that they leave all valuables in their hall locker.  Do not bring any valuables to their PE locker.

How can I keep my child’s iPod safe?

Leave them at home.  iPods are not safe in schools for many reasonsThey are not allowed on in school during the hours of 8:00-3:05 except in the cafeteria during lunchtime.  They are not allowed to be used in any classes or hallways, only in the lunchroom.

What is the policy on cell phone use and how can I help keep my child’s phone safe?

Cell phones are required to be kept in the students’ hall lockers in the off mode, not in their possession.  Cell phones are not allowed to be used from 8:00–3:05.  Due to the thefts which have occurred with cell phones, we advise that you do not bring them to school.  Leave all cell phones in hallway lockers.  Never bring cell phones to PE class.

STAFF

What is the best way to contact a teacher or staff member?

E-mail them and also leave them a voicemail.  By doing both, you should be able to receive a quicker response since some staff members may check one over the other more often throughout the day.  If you do not receive a response in a day or two, repeat the contacts again.  At this time, I would also suggest contacting the department chair to inform them of your attempts to reach the staff member.

How can I obtain the e-mails of staff members?

Call ext. 100 or go directly to the website. Click on Departments, go to that staff member's department, and you'll find all contact information listed by each person's name.

Whom should I contact if a teacher is not returning my calls in a timely manner?

Attempt to contact the teacher an additional time and then contact their Department Chair (see list on each Department website).

Whom should I contact if I have a complaint or compliment about a staff member?

Contact that STAFF MEMBER immediately to have a conversation with them.  Oftentimes a conversation will help resolve any issues.  If that doesn’t work, contact the Department Chair.  If all else fails, contact Mr. Scanlon at ext. 193 -- he is the Assistant Principal in charge of staffing and Curriculum & Development.

What if my child is having a problem with a staff member?

Contact that staff member to discuss what you have heard from your child. Usually, a conversation will rectify any problems.  If this doesn’t work, contact the Department Chair to set a meeting.  If these meetings don’t help resolve the situation, contact Mr. Scanlon at ext. 193.

ATTENDANCE

Whom should I call regarding an absence?

Contact Ms. Spry at ext. 191.

When should I call in an absence?

Before 10:00 a.m. on the day of the absence for the student to be given full make-up privileges.

What should I do if my child needs to be released early from school?

Send a note with your child stating the time and reason for the dismissal. Your child needs to bring this note to the attendance secretary, Ms. Spry, located in Student Services, as soon as they arrive at school.   Also, you need to contact Ms. Spry at 442-7500 ext. 191 and leave a message stating why your child will be leaving early.  You will then need to go to the receptionist (entrance #3) to pick your child up at the time of the dismissal.

Whom should I contact regarding an attendance problem that my child is experiencing?

Mr. Sibley, the Dean of Students, should be contacted immediately at ext. 109.

DISCIPLINE

If my child is suspended, how do I get their homework?

Contact Ms. Spry at ext. 191.  She is located in the office just west of the Assistant Principals' office, and is responsible for obtaining all work.

How do I go about appealing the suspension of my child?

Contact Mr. Baldermann, who handles all appeals, through his secretary, Mrs. Nardi, at ext. 107.  The appeal must be in writing and delivered to Mr. Baldermann’s office within 24 hours of the suspension.

How does my child re-enter the building following a suspension?

Parents must attend a re-entry meeting with their student in order to return after a suspension.  Re-entry meetings will be held between 7:00 & 7:30 a.m. on the day the student is allowed to return.

What if my child is having problems with other students while in the building?

Contact my office immediately or have your child come to the Assistant Principal’s Office.

What is a Hall Sweep?

The security team members issue lunch detentions to students who are late for class.

What is a detention?

A student could be issued a detention for a variety of reasons.  On average, they usually last between 15-30 minutes and are served before or after school.   The student is required to serve them either with the teacher who issued them, or in my office.

What is a lunch detention?

These are given to students who are tardy to class. The student is required to serve their detention during their lunch period the same day that they are caught in the hall sweep, or the following day if the sweep occurs after lunch.

What is the ADA (Alternative Day Assignment) room used for?

Students are sent here for a variety of reasons, in lieu of sending them home.   Students could spend anywhere from one period to all day in ADA.  Lunch detentions are also served in the ADA room.  School work is expected to be completed, and sleeping is not allowed.

What is a building restriction?

Students are denied access to the building or specific locations of the building due to their behaviors.  This includes all school-sponsored events on or off school grounds.
