Riverside Brookfield High School, only 13 miles west of Chicago's Loop, is located in a village known as "the village in the forest". Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Riverside is known for winding streets and Victorian homes. Nearby Brookfield was developed in the late 19th century by S.E. Gross and is home to the world famous Brookfield Zoo, which welcomes over 2 million visitors a year. The high school district also draws from North Riverside, and parts of LaGrange Park, Broadview and Lyons. Residents are largely professional, semiprofessional, managerial, proprietary and skilled workers. The student population is approximately 77.1% Caucasian, 15.5% Hispanic, 1.9% Asian, 3.1 % African-American, .2% AmerIndian, and 2.2% multi-racial. Of the 1491 students, 15% speak another language at home. The Class of 2007 included 3 National Merit Semifinalists and 8 National Merit Commended Scholars. RBHS boasts a 99% graduation rate, including a 100% graduation rate for its Hispanic and African American students. The school has been rated among the top 100 of America's Best High Schools by Newsweek magazine.
