The Days of Infamy

On two days, separated by sixty years, the United States came under surprise attack from a foreign enemy. After each of these attacks, the President addressed a shock nation. Posted below are the speeches given by Franklin D. Roosevelt and George W. Bush following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 attacks. Your assignment is to read and analyze each of these document then identify the key similarities of the two speeches.

Analysis Questions

1. In this speech, the president is preparing the nation for war. It is imperative that he characterize the actions of our enemy in such a way that the American people will support the use of force. In each speech, specifically cite the lines where the president outlines the actions of the enemy.

 2. As the Commander-in-Chief, the president makes promises to the American people. Specifically, cite those promises from each speech.

3. The choice of words is vitally important in a speech of this type. A president must use emotionally charged language. For example, instead of saying " December 7th, a really bad day" Roosevelt chose "December 7th, A day that will live in infamy". Review each speech and list the "power phrases" the president used to energize his message.
