LOCAL AREA COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

As a result of generous local donors, 30 different area scholarships were awarded in 2008 to over 50 seniors attending various post-secondary schools after graduation.  The total amount exceeded over $100,000.00.  Most local scholarship deadlines are due in April. 

Applications for all local scholarships will be available in Student Services in early March.  Please see your counselor or Ms. Englehart if you are interested in applying for one or more of the following scholarship opportunities. 

 

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMAN (AAUW) RIVERSIDE BRANCH SCHOLARSHIP

The Riverside Branch of AAUW is offering a $500 grant to one or more senior girls at RBHS who will be graduating in June 2008.  The recipient should be someone who enjoys art/architecture, although it might not be a career goal.  Qualifications include a GPA of at least a 2.50, demonstrate good citizenship and maturity, plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college, have a recommendation from a fine arts teacher, instructor, sponsor, or coach and and official RBHS transcript.  Candidates who have received no other scholarships or grants to date will be given preference.  A transcript must be included as part of the application. Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

AARON SEMENSKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Aaron Semenske Scholarship Foundation will award a renewable $2000 academic scholarship to one senior student/athlete graduating in June 2008.  The scholarship will be considered on the basis of academic achievement, athletic participation, involvement in the community and/or religious groups, and demonstrated leadership in the community.  Applicants must be in the upper quarter of the graduating class, earned a varsity letter in at least two sports, give evidence of leadership activities, give evidence of demonstrated community service and must be accepted at a 4-year college or university.  Recommendations from a faculty member, a varsity coach, and a religious or community leader are also required. Deadline is April 17, 2009.

BLOOD DRIVE SCHOLARSHIPS

Candidates must have assisted in the planning of the Blood Drives at RBHS or donated blood.  The candidates must submit a short essay which includes a personal statement explaining why donating blood is important and how this experience will impact their future.  The application must also include to letters of recommendation for RB teachers or staff members. Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

FLORENCE ROONEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Candidates for this scholarship must be a resident of Brookfield, plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college or trade school, have demonstrated community service, show evidence of financial need, and have a minimum GPA of a 3.0. Deadline is April 17, 2009.  

 

L. HOWARD ABBOTT & FRANCES H. ABBOTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Applications are available in Student Services for the Abbott Memorial Scholarship administered by the Fifth Third Bank.  This $1000 one-time scholarship is based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and financial need.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

KIWANIS CLUB OF BROOKFIELD SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Club of Brookfield is offering scholarships to graduating seniors residing in the Village of Brookfield.  The criteria used for determining the awards will be academics, financial need, participation in community and school activities and a personal interview.  Deadline is April 17, 2009. 

 

KIWANIS CLUB OF RIVERSIDE SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Club of Riverside will offer $4000 in scholarships to five deserving high school seniors graduating this June who reside in Riverside or North Riverside.  Three are $1000 scholarships and two are $500 scholarships.  Applicants must be average or above average academically and must be of sound moral character.  Successful candidates will be invited for personal interviews. Deadline is April 17, 2009.

  

PATRONS' COUNCIL ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 grant will be awarded to a senior with a GPA of at least a 3.50 who has demonstrated financial need.  A short essay is required as well as letters of recommendation.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

PATRONS' COUNCIL GENERAL RECOGNITION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship recipient must have a GPA between a 2.0 and a 3.49.  Financial need is not a requirement.  This $500 award is for an outstanding student who is "middle of the road" academically.  Almost any area in which a student shows depth and commitment of time and energy and exploration will be considered.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

PATRONS' COUNCIL MERIT ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 grant will be awarded to graduating seniors who is planning to attend a 2-year or 4-year college.  Financial need is not a factor.  The recipient must have at least a3.5 GPA and two letters of recommendation.  A short essay is required.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

PATRONS' COUNCIL SHIRLEY LEWIS SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 grant will be awarded to a student interested in pursuing a course of studies that leads to a teaching certificate.  Candidates will be considered on the basis of classroom work, extracurricular activities and a short essay.  Candidates must have at least a 3.0 GPA and two letters of recommendation.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

PATRONS' COUNCIL STUDENT SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 grant will be awarded to a senior who has contributed at least 100 hours of service within the past 12 months.  No minimum GPA is required and financial need is not considered.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

  

RENEE PETIT FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

The Renee Petit Fine Arts Scholarship is intended to assist students who have exhibited outstanding aptitude and creativity in one or more of the fine arts to pursue their educational and or professional studies.  The candidate must have earned a minimum GPA of 3.5 in all fine arts related high school course work and a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.  A short essay, a letter of recommendation, and a performance based product which showcases the candidate's talents and achievements in at least one of the fine arts are required. Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

RIVERSIDE BROOKFIELD EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

 

(RBEA) ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP GRANT

The RBEA has established academic scholarship grants of at least $500 to be awarded to seniors graduating in June 2008.  This year's scholarships will be considered on the basis of academic achievement, and involvement in the school and community.  Candidates must rank in the upper 20% of the senior class at the end of seventh semester.  Finalists may be asked to participate in an interview with the RBEA Scholarship Committee Members.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

RIVERSIDE JUNIOR WOMEN'S CHARITY SCHOLARSHIP 2008

This $1500 scholarship is given to recognize a female Riverside student with outstanding community service and strong leadership qualities.  The recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA, have demonstrated leadership qualities by serving in a leadership or coordinating capacity for one or more community service projects, and plans to attend college next fall.  A personal interview may be required.  Application available at www.riversidejuniors.org .  Must be postmarked by March 28, 2009 

 

RIVERSIDE MASONIC LODGE SCHOLARSHIP

The Riverside Masonic Scholarship is a one-time $700 scholarship which is awarded to a graduating senior at RBHS.  Applicants must be in the upper 25% of the class and must not be receiving any other scholarships.  Academic and extra-curricular activities will be considered.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

RICH PORT YMCA MEN'S CLUB SERVICE AWARD

The Rich Port YMCA Men's Club is seeking nominees for the Club Service Award.   This $750 cash award is given annually to one senior at RBHS.  The purpose of this award is to recognize a student committed to community service. This is not an academic achievement award nor is it a scholarship.  Interviews will be held.  Deadline is April 1, 2009.

 

ROTARY CLUB OF BROOKFIELD-RIVERSIDE

The Rotary Club will recognize four graduating seniors who have demonstrated an outstanding level of community service activity during their high school career and have a GPA of at least a 2.50.  Hours of service to the school through school organizations and school-sponsored activities and hours of service given in the community through religious, fraternal, and civic organizations will all be considered.  Three one-time awards of $750 will be given.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.      

 

ROTARY CLUB OF BROOKFIELD-RIVERSIDE

IN MEMORY OF DECEASED MEMBERS MARIE CARLSON AND TOM SEQUENS

The Rotary Club will recognize one graduating senior who has demonstrated an outstanding level of community service activity during his or her high school career and has a GPA of at least a 2.50.  Hours of service to the school through school organizations and school-sponsored activities and hours of service given in the community through religious, fraternal, and civic organizations will all be considered.  A one-time award of $750 will be given.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.      

 

STEVEN J. DUVE MEMORIAL FUND

The candidate must have at least a 3.0 GPA during the last 3 semesters, have an interest in nature, the environment, and/or ecology, participated on at least two athletic teams during both their junior and senior years, and be attending a 2 or 4-year college next fall.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

KRISTEN FUERST SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is a memorial to Kristen Fuerst, an RBHS student who died in a train accident in 1990.  This $500 scholarship is awarded to a senior male or female tennis player.  The winning candidate is determined by the head tennis coach at RBHS.  There is no official application.  Please direct interest and questions to a RB tennis coach.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

ROBERT F. GWINN AWARD

A $500 award will go to a senior planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college or university to study business or finance.  Academic achievement, personal goals, and involvement in the field of study will be part of the consideration.  There is no official application.  Please direct your interest to Ms. Patty Sarkady, Dept. Chair for Applied Arts.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

OTTO HAACK AWARD

A $500 award will go to a RB senior planning to study in the area of industrial technology.  Academic record, personal essay, career goals, and involvement in the field of study will be considered.  There is no official application.  Please direct your interest to Ms. Patty Sarkady, Dept. Chair for Applied Arts.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

ANTON AND DAWN HELLER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

A $500 scholarship will be given to a media/technology student.  There is an application.  Please direct your interest to Mrs. Doreen Fritz, Dept. Chair for Library and Instructional Technology.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

JAMES A. SWANSON SCHOLARSHIP

The James A. Swanson Math Scholarship will be given to at least two graduating seniors planning to further their studies in math-related majors.  Awards vary from year to year.  A short written statement and two letters of recommendation are required.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

SODEXHO SCHOLARSHIP

This $1000 scholarship is for students interested in pursuing a career in hospitality, food service, or food science.  A 250 word personal essay describing your professional and career goals is required.  Financial need is considered.  Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

THE RYAN WOMACK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Ryan Womack Memorial Scholarship is administered through the Riverside Presbyterian Church.  Any student who has been an active member of the Riverside Presbyterian Church or who has been a member of the Youth Group for two year is eligible to apply for the award through the church.  A church board of fifteen members determines the winners.  Awards are renewable yearly. Deadline is April 17, 2009.

 

THE MARY FRANSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is administered through the West Suburban Association of Educational Office ProfessionalThis scholarship is open to applicants who wish to pursue a degree in the field of education.  It is a $1,000 non-renewable scholarship.  Postmark deadline is March 9, 2009.  An essay is required, along with 3 letters of recommendation.  Applications are available in the Student Services department. 

 

THE MARION T. WOOD SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

This is a $1,000 non-renewable scholarship administered through the West Suburban Association of Educational Office Professionals.  Postmark deadline is January 9, 2009.  An essay is required, along with 3 letters of recommendation.  Applications are available in the Student Services department. 

 

THE BRITISH HOME NURSE MENTORING PROGRAM

The British Home's Health Care and Rehabilitation Center is offering a paid work-study, internship, and mentor-based scholarship and certification program to a limited number of qualified RBHS juniors and seniors interested in pursing a career in nursing.  You must be 16 years old at the time of starting this program.  The British Home will provide accepted applicants with paid part-time work, clinical internship, full nursing school tuition, books and fees, a nurse mentor from The British Home staff, preparation and pre-testing for nurse licensure exams, and educational resources.  This program will help you achieve a RN licensure two years after high school and earn an average starting salary of $40,000 to $50,000 per year.  Please see your counselor for more details and for an application. 

 

THE EDWIN R. FREDERICKSEN SCHOLARSHIP FUND

F/B/O RIVERSIDE BROOKFIELD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This scholarship is for the education and training of graduating RB students who will be attending a technical college or a trade school in fall 2008.  Twenty $2000 scholarships are possible thanks to the very generous donation made by the late Edwin R. Frederickson and will be administered by the Fifth Third Bank.  The scholarship is based on, in order of importance; need, scholastic attainment, scholastic potential and community service.  An official transcript is required as well as a letter of recommendation from a RB faculty member.  See your counselor for an application.  Deadline is April 23, 2009. 

 

HINSDALE BANK & TRUST SCHOLARSHIP

 

$2,000 scholarship awarded to one graduating senior from RBHS.  The recipient will be selected on the basis of positive leadership and character as exhibited by academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, and involvement in the community.  Applicants must have maintained a “B” average or better and plan to enroll full-time at an accredited two or four-year college, university, or trade/vocational school.  Applicant’s total family annual income may not exceed $57,680 adjusted gross income per federal income tax documents.  Applicants must submit a completed application to student services by April 18, 2009.

 

MAYOR SCHECK’S YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

 

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and North Riverside residents, under the age of 25, who plan to attend or are already attending college, vocational school, industrial school, or a post-high program preparing for employment.  Applicants must complete an application (available in student services or at the North Riverside Village Hall), a copy of driver’s license or state ID card, minimum of two letters of recommendation from non-related adults, and a statement (approx. 250 words) telling what type of education you are pursuing and why you are interested in that area.  All of the above materials must be returned to the North Riverside Village Hall by mail or in person by May 1, 2009.  Place the items in an envelope marked confidential and address to:
