Improving Your Child's Social Communication Skills     Eileen Meyer & Mary Eannace, LADSE Speech and Language Services

A brief overview of language development and the importance of social language development will be addressed. Techniques and activities that can be used at home to promote language development will also be discussed.

The IEP is a critical component for ensuring that your child's special needs are adequately addressed. Techniques and activities that can be used at home to promote language development will also be discussed.

March 10, 2009     Tuesday (6:30 - 8:00 p.m.)

More than Words: A Make & Take Workshop on Using Visual Aids to Support Communication in the Home and Community     Kelly Rathbun, LADSE Speech and Language Services

We all benefit from visual supports every day through the use of street signs, a calendar/daily planner, and aisle markers at the grocery store. This class will focus on creating individualized visual supports to help your child become more successful and independent at home and in the community. First we will talk about why and how we use visual supports to improve behavior, communication, and independence. We will then focus on how to make and find visual supports appropriate for your child. All participants will receive a CD of materials to make at home.

Sensory & Behavior     Deb Daniel, LADSE Occupational Therapy

Partipating in this popular discussion topic will allow you to leave with an accurate understanding of the difference between sensory processing and integration. Our presenter will advise how sensory is addressed in the classroom and will provide applicable strategies to implement in your home.

The Transition Series is a training developed to assist parents and students to prepare for the change from life as a student in school to life as a citizen in the community. For all young people, preparing for this change is complicated. For students with disabilities and their families, preparing for such changes can be particularly challenging, overwhelming, and exciting!

Transition: Making it in the Real World         Tuesday, October 6, 2009         

Participants will review the four critical goals of transition, consider practical activities which promote their achievement, become familiar with pertinent federal legislation, and understand the important roles for family members in the planning.

Transition Plans: Roadmaps to the Future          Tuesday, October 13, 2009

IDEA requires transition planning for all students with disabilities. Participants will learn how transition planning can be incorporated into students' ongoing special education plans. The influence of competency testing, graduation requirements, diplomas, integration and curriculum emphasis on transition plans will be discussed.

Getting Ready: Preparing for Work While in School          Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Participants learn about what should be happening in school to ensure that students with disabilities find satisfying work in the community. Guest speakers will discuss specific examples of community based vocational education opportunities. Participants will learn how reasonable accommodations, job coaches and supports in the workplace assist a student in learning, enjoying, and keeping a job.

Moving On: Life in the Community          Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Do satisfying work opportunities for young adults with disabilities really exist in the community? During this workshop, a panel of adult community service representatives provide information and answer questions regarding local employment, education and independent living options.

Planning Ahead: Future Finances and Supports          Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Theresa Varnet, JD., will be presenting on setting up your finances to protect and provide for your family member with a disability. Other issues that will be discussed will be public benefits, Social Security support, Guardianship and how to plan effectively. Materials will include information on writing a "letter of intent" and setting up supports.
